portrait-of-a-feminist-man:
As heartening as this particular story may be, it reveals a very serious and perturbing reality about our lawmakers today: they are voting on legislation that affects people they understand nothing about.
I realize that requesting “personally met every single type of person in the country” on the resumes of electoral candidates is a little insane, but shouldn’t it be the explicit and mandated responsibility of every elected official to seek out and consider all facets of an argument when they’re going to vote on it?
Just because you don’t personally associate with homosexuals in your spare time does not excuse you from educating yourself on the matter when it becomes a relevant topic for your job. You wouldn’t hire a journalist and then just shrug if you paid them to write a report about gay marriage and they said “Whoops, I don’t know anything about gays, guess I’ll just make it up and pass it off as fact.”
Politicians, this is your job. This is what the public is paying you to do.
Do it better.
We actually had a conversation about this in American Politics and if politicians can ever understand the concerns of the people they’re trying to serve. When representatives have such a great health plan, what do they care about how it costs 100 dollars for me to get a pap?
However, they at least need to TRY to understand our needs and concerns.
Or maybe we need more representatives who are more like us. (By us, I mean queer, woman, from hard backgrounds, raised working class, gsm, anything that isn’t rich, white and male, but you know without those privileges, it’s hard to get into such a position of power anyway.)
Sorry if this commentary seems scattered, but yeah. I agree. Understand the legislation you’re voting. It’s your job. You get paid a fuckton of money to do it, so do it well.
